  • The Rise of Dell

Dell Computers can be called a veritable giant of the computer industry. The sphere of Dell’s influence is present in each sub-industry of the larger technology and computer production industry. Dell Computers is not sought after for just computers but also various computer-related products such as servers, data storage devices, routers, network switches, computer peripherals and televisions among others.

Dell even develops and markets software alongside its cutting edge computers. Dell Computers has moved from strength to strength since its inception. Dell has transformed from being a side-business for a grad student at the University of Texas to one of the largest corporations on the planet. The 95,000-strong professional workforce makes Dell one of the largest employers in the world.

Dell Computers has dominated the computer industry since it was formed. Dell held the topmost position worldwide with respect to sales in the 80’s and 90’s. Despite the entry of new companies, Dell laptops and Dell computers held on to their popularity and this is evident by the fact that they garnered the second highest sales in the year 2008, right after Hewlett-Packard.

Dell’s incredible drive comes from the man at its helm, Michael Dell, who jumpstarted the company in 1984 while he was still a student at the University of Texas. Dell Computers started as a company called PC Limited, which sold IBM computers built out of stock components. Dell’s passion for technology, his sheer determination, hard work and the thousand dollars he invested as capital into the business began to bear fruit when he had his eureka moment.

Dell started to sell computers directly to customers without involving a retailer. It was an idea that had never been tried before – a company selling directly to the customer. Eliminating the retailer from the delivery chain slashed the price of the computers that Dell sold.

Dell Computers flourished on the twin advantage of providing technologically advanced computers at very competitive prices. Nobody could have predicted the outcome but it worked for Dell. According to Dell, it would make computers more customer-centric. Business boomed and Dell Computers was well on its way to becoming a grand success. Michael Dell quit college and decided to focus on his business.

PC Limited launched Turbo PC in 1985. The design was exclusive and it ran on Intel8088 and had a speed of 8 MHz. Dell decided to advertise in computer magazines that were distributed nationally. Dell also decided to let the customers specify their preferences for the computer appearance. The Turbo PC was a huge success as it gave users what they aspire for, a customized, exclusive computer at an affordable price.

After that, there was no looking back! PC Limited was renamed as Dell Computer Corporation. Dell Computers gained a boost in capital to the tune of US$ 50 million and steadily rose to become the ground-breaking technological prime mover of the computer industry. Dell was included in the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies of the world in 1992.
